For several years the Oliver Springs Historical Society met at the Senior Citizens building and Library, but thanks to many individuals the Museum stands as not only a thing of beauty but a living testament of the Oliver Springs community.
The museum is the result of a group's hard work. All of our members participated in the successful transition of the building from the Abston Garage to the Oliver Springs Museum. Ladies cooked, cleaned, painted, and conducted fundraisers. Men did the deconstruction and reconstruction of the building. People donated time, materials, equipment, and financial resources to help achieve this goal at the beginning without Federal or State Grants.
In 2007, the Coker family made the initial payment to purchase the Daugherty Garage. With additional donations added for a total of $40.00, Eddie Coker began the deconstruction under his Contractor's License in 2007. All of the members worked to tear down the interior and clean up the building.
Eddie Coker drew up the design for the Museum in 2008 while Charles Tichy contacted the East Tennessee Community Design Center who did the additional design work . Eddie Coker hired carpenters, plumbers, concrete finishers & electricians to begin reconstruction in November of 2008. One bit of interesting information is that Eddie Coker saved a piece of trim from the historic house next door from which a knife was ordered to make door and window trim.
In October 2011, Robbie Underwood was hired and along with the assistance of Andrew Freer, supervised Morgan County inmates who were brought in to help assist with interior work. Thanks to Morgan County, the inmates worked on and off from October 2011 - March 2014 making trim framing ceilings and installing drywall.
With the work of many, from April, 2014 -February, 2015, the Event Room and main hall were completed.
Steward Construction constructed the Stone Theater, a theater with a stage and seating for 110.
Thanks to Roane County, inmates worked on and off from 2021 - 2023 for a total of 8 months. Robert Sparkes, with the Roane County Sheriff's Department, supervised the construction of the Streetscape.
